IPv4 depletion, exhaustion, there is no more.

Posted by Luciano on February 3, 2011 in Computers, Internetz

No more left. IANA has given away last /8 of IPv4 they ever had, today. Few more months till RIR’s exhaust their free address space. Than what? Dual stacked Internet; after this Internet will NOT be end-to-end routable for the long time, if ever. Two protocols, two shows, gets even more complicated – which means – more money for those who know their way around, lol.I am glad to be on top of that wave for several reasons, apart from sure salary.

First of all, why is IPv6 so different from IPv4? It is new, more fun, more secure, easier to use, easier to understand, more logical. It implements mechanisms that will enable better mesh routing, thus it will decrease load off the backbones and backbones will be utilized for transport of “original” content, which will be locally redistributed via meshes. It natively implements QoS which is impossible to maintain throughout the link without lots of care in the real IPv4 world. IPv6 is NOT the same as IPv4 (thanks, IETF) and it differs in many things; I will not bother to list them all here – you will google up that information. I will simply share my joy cuz old is out and new is in, and try to picture tomorrow. It will be a bit harder in the future; Dinosaurs will mostly not adopt well to IPv6 and they will keep practicing their bad habits dragged from the age of old IPv4. Youngsters, on the other hand shall have trouble understanding old ways and “traditional” reasons how things were done old days. Will they support decades old equipment well, how will they be able to cut down costs by combining old with new?

I wonder what year will networking be introduced to elementary schools. There is no way that people will just keep being dependent of wiz neighbors, paid technicians, customer support. When will they get bored and understand that they HAVE to invest some time, brains and thinking in order to get things done? Not in my lifetime, that’s sure.

Speed Test Nov. 29 2010

Posted by Luciano on November 29, 2010 in Internetz

Today, I am testing throughput to European speedtest servers. Lets see how they compare to each other; I am expecting anything above 50Mbps, symmetrical; I have set up clean 80Mbps from my machine to the Internetz.
Speedtest results show that the widest pipe is from Ulm and Frankfurt, both in Germany, where we can download from Speedtest server with speeds exceeding 50Mbps, and the best upload is in Salzbur, Austria, where we upload with more than 44Mpbs. Speedtest to SIOL gave us even better results – giving ~68Mbps of upload/download speeds. Obviously, if you need to measure anything above 20Mbps, there are no established facilities that can give you reliable and truthful network test result. This is the problem I will need to work on in the future.

DIY: Mini Media Center – part 1

Posted by Luciano on October 24, 2010 in Computers, Idea, Interesting

Not so long ago, I run into an old mobo of interesting features – it was mini-itx mobo used in a satellite receiver. Along with it I prepared a silent PSU [also ripped out of a receiver], old AGP video / radio capture card, slim HDD – sata 40gb I had laying around, an old DVD writer, an old IR mini keyboard along with an old IR printer port that can be hacked into a receiver for universal remote… … continue reading.
